Talking about If you could change just one thingI ran across this blog today. This entry seemed profound to me, and I thought I would share. I'm going to think on the offered question. Quote If you could change just one thing No Ambivalence On This One Can you believe it? There's no two ways about this one. lol You've all heard about the latest woman/boy relationship in the national news? The female teacher from Nebraska that took a 13 year old male student of hers to Mexico! They have emails that tell of sexual contact...she kidnapped him... What is wrong with women like this? How can they find a child so attractive? Just in case you haven't heard about it by now, here's the story... Teacher arrested after allegedly fleeing with boy My biggest problem with stories like this is that they never refer to a woman as a pedophile in the articles. If this were a reversed situation...a male teacher having sex with and kidnapping a young female student, headlines would blare PEDOPHILE. I have no compassion for this woman. Absolutely none. You? Free Speech Without Limits Leads To AnarchyOur Constitution and Bill of Rights make the US a wonderful country. Our freedoms are without parallel. But some like to push the bar...they're never satisfied. Can you imagine freedoms without limits? Society must have order...or face chaos. The Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas was taught the limits to free speech this week when a jury awarded a marine's father $10.9 million in damages. Albert Snyder's son was a marine...Westboro Baptist Church members picketed his funeral with signs saying, "Thank God for dead soldiers". If you are not familiar with this case or church, please read at this link - Westboro Baptist Church Most First Amendment attorneys seem to think the ruling will be overturned. I don't. I appreciate our First Amendment right, of course, but as with other rights, there needs to be limits. Had the WBC held a rally in a city park while holding a legal permit, I wouldn't have any problems with them. I don't like their message, but I'd respect their right to speak. This was a funeral, though. There should have been respect shown. But as with all hate groups, respect and intelligence go right out the window. All hate groups are disgusting...and I am grateful for the limits placed on our freedoms. It's a fine line we walk with our freedoms, but what would we rather have? A controlled set of rights within a democracy or anarchy or socialism? The Fine Line of FreedomI wonder how many take notice of the small freedoms taken away from us. Do we only notice when something dramatically affects our own lives? Are we sensitive enough to take notice when it doesn't? I know that many have taken notice of our privacy rights because of the Patriot Act. That has been huge and all over the media. Political pundits are fond of writing op/ed articles about it. But what about controversial freedoms? Take cigarette smoking. How many take the time to analyze the right to smoke? Most jump on the bandwagon of it being unhealthy and stinky. Both are true, of course...but when you dig deeper, a larger problem appears. Why doesn't the government make cigarette smoking illegal? Why just continue the warnings by the US Surgeon General? My state government continues to raise the tax of cigarettes. Why not just make it illegal and be done with it? Because the government doesn't really care, do they? They just want more money in their coffers. It's quite disgusting, really. It is targeted discrimination. The government can continue to get away with it, though, because the majority of people just don't care. Target smokers...if they want to slowly kill themselves, why not make them pay in a big way for it? The day is coming where those same people that don't care for one minority group will feel similar pain, though. Obesity is being targeted in the media. Will fast food places survive the onslaught? Will taxes be placed on unhealthy foods and raised over and over again? Whatever happened to our right to choose? Whatever happened to the public recognizing the greed of the government? Should smoking be legal? No. But it is. That doesn't make it right to penalize smokers with higher and higher taxes. Have you thought deeply enough about this and what an impact it is making on our small freedoms? Are you able to put it into perspective without personal convictions blinding you? The future is a scary place. How do you feel about it? Nationwide Freeze On All ExecutionsThe American Bar Association has called for a nationwide freeze on all executions. There reasons are: - Spotty collection and preservation of DNA evidence, which has been used to exonerate more than 200 inmates - Misidentification by eyewitnesses - False confessions from defendants - Persistent racial disparities that make death sentences more likely when victims are white. You can read more here. The death penalty is something I struggle with. In some cases, it doesn't bother me in the least to see someone sentenced to die...to hear of a completed execution. On the other hand, the idea of some being put to death and then finding out they were innocent the entire time weighs on my conscience. Have you heard of Innocence.org? It is an organization "dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice". Check out their Faces of Exoneration. What do you think about the death penalty? Do you think a nationwide freeze on all executions is a good or bad thing? Inmate Nuptials The Smoking Gun has a new report out about some correction officers in Florida allowing two women inmates to marry while in prison. The wedding is described as elaborate...their rings made out of hair and dental floss. They had a wedding cake, pink bows made from prison forms, and one wore a veil. Another inmate gave one of the women away...walked her from a cell down some stairs to meet the other bride. It was a ten minute ceremony, and the brides were not allowed to kiss. Six corrections officers have been suspended, one guard fired, and another resigned. Here's the link if you want to follow the 12 page report... Jailers Allowed Same-Sex Inmate Nuptials Wouldn't you think that every inmate in any prison would now fight to be married? But especially in that prison...I'm surprised we aren't hearing that there was some kind of uprising because only one couple was allowed to do this. Although I am not against gay marriages, I am against allowing marriages while in prison. Then again, I hate to think of two people in love having to wait. But wait...they wouldn't have been in prison and needing to wait if they hadn't done something very wrong. lol What do you think? Reality TV I am a reality tv fan. There has always been the debate that reality tv is scripted or fake. I'm sure it is...but I'm also sure that reality does get inserted into each show. Kid Nation is on. Ten year old Taylor drives me crazy. There have been enough episodes on that I can finally say that I have tried to find a redeeming quality in this young girl and just can't. She is snotty, lazy, and mean-spirited. So...is that my emotion or thought? Some say this little girl has been told how to act and what to say...scripted. I've thought about it...but I'm just not buying it. I think this is who she is in real life. Two questions, I guess...anyone watching Kid Nation...do you think Taylor is really like she is shown or do you think she is scripted? And two...what do you think about reality tv in general? Scripted, partly scripted, or not at all scripted? Of course I am of two minds...I think producers interefere, but I also think a lot is reality...and personalities come through. Polygamy Instantly...when you first hear the word polygamy, do you feel disdain and just feel that it is wrong? First impression...based on emotion. I used to think anyone living a polygamous lifestyle was a freak. It is outside of the norm...polygamists are treated as lepers. I only knew what had been spoken in hushed tones by others. Small snippets of opinions... "More than one wife! Disgusting!" "What kind of woman would allow her husband to sleep with other women?" I don't recall why I began investigating polygamy for myself, but I'll always be glad I did. Reading personal accounts of people on both sides of the fence really opened my mind. I realized how little I actually knew... I was surprised to learn that polygamy isn't really the correct term for a man having more than one wife. Here's the breakdown of terminology: Polygamy - the practice of marriage to more than one spouse simultaneously Polygyny - one man having more than one wife Polyandry - one woman having more than one husband I used to think polygamy was about "those" people...the ones that where clothing that covers them from the neck down...women in dresses...Little House on the Prairie-ish...Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (I must inject a disclaimer here...LDS want everyone to know that they are in no way affiliated with the FLDS...lest I receive hate comments. lol) There are more groups than just that kind. Islam (again a disclaimer...not all Muslims practice or believe in polygamy) Christian Polygamy Groups Independent Polygamists (includes some that have religious values and some that don't) I've read many books on polygamy...history, personal accounts, etc. I moved on to blogs of some living the polygamous lifestyle. There are a few message boards out there for ex-polygamists, and there's a site out there called SisterWives that are for people living the life and considering the lifestyle. Sisterwives is a fount of information...it's one of few sites that isn't about anything FLDS. There is no religious affiliation associated with the site. A reporter and photographer at the Salt Lake Tribune follow FLDS polygamy. Brooke Adams, the reporter, has a blog where she adds things that aren't posted in the articles she writes that the paper publishes. Every so often she inserts personal insights from what she has seen. She has a great current blog entry if you're curious... Plural Life Blog The SLT photographer, Trent Nelson, has a blog, also. His isn't all about FLDS polygamy...his other stuff is worth a look, too. They say pictures are worth a thousand words... Fly On The Wall My first impression based on emotion was that polygamy is wrong. One side of me still feels it is just not right...but after researching it, spending time on personal accounts, opening my mind beyond what I've been told to believe by others...the other side of me believes there is nothing wrong with polygamy...for those that choose to live it. I do not condone or support Warren Jeffs's way of polygamy. I do believe that this is America...we should be allowed to live as we wish... Some throw back, "But what about the children?" Well, if we didn't make polygamy a shameful act, a taboo, something to be hidden...kids wouldn't have to feel as if they've done something wrong...that their parents and families are hideous. There are pedophiles in every religion, every commune, every city...basic monogamous families rich and poor can be struck by a pedophile in their home. We have government run agencies to watch over our children. If we're really concerned about the children, we should stop making them feel like freaks, as if they and their families are horrible. Once again, warring sides...thought versus emotion...for me. What is your opinion? Being of Two Minds Modern science knows much about such conflicts. We call the mental state that engenders it "ambivalence": a collision between thought and feeling. --David Seabury The ability to see two sides is more of a curse than a blessing. I read a news story and make a first impression...a judgement. Then I read or hear a dissenting opinion. I understand where the contrary belief is coming from, so I balance the two. There is rarely a winner. Led by emotions...I think most of us make our first impressions based on feelings. The more knowledge we gain about the subject, the more our thoughts provide a different way of things. So which wins? Thought or feeling? That's what my space is about...collisions between thought and feeling on different topics. Which will win each time? Or will both thought and feeling lose to indecision? |
